Service Description

IMPORTANT, PLEASE NOTE: This booking says it's for August 3rd at 1:00pm, but you are welcome to attend anytime during the festival on the 3rd, or 4th- you do NOT have to attend on the 3rd. We are partnering up with Kadence Raku and Pacific Northwest Sculptors to bring you a community Raku firing event! Kadence Raku is hosting a Raku firing at August 3rd and 4th at the Vancouver Art and Music Festival in Esther Short Park. Bring your own Raku-ready bisque pieces on the day that works best for you! Pieces are requested to be dome-shaped and relatively thin for the best chances of success. Raku clay must be used for your pieces. You are able to purchase Raku clay at the studio by the pound- just ask any staff member for help! We'll provide the Raku clay for the class, glaze, safety gear, and everything needed to Raku fire! Not familiar with Raku? Here's a quick run down: This type of ceramic firing is an extremely unique and exciting experience. Unlike the traditional kiln firing process, Raku pottery is glazed with special Raku glazes, then taken straight from the kiln while it's still glowing red hot. The piece is then placed into a container filled with combustible materials (sawdust, horse hair, newspaper, straw, leaves, etc.). These materials burn and create an environment in which the smoke interacts with the glazes, creating unpredictable effects and patterns on the piece, often with crackled textures and shine. The piece is then removed from the soot and washed in water. The final result? A stunning one-of-a-kind piece unlike any other! Event Details: - The Raku firing will take place at Esther Short Park on August 3rd and 4th between 11am-5pm, pick which date works best for you! You must be able to bring your own piece/s to the event as we will not be able to transport your pieces for you. Kilnfolk and Pacific Northwest Sculptors will have booths together at the southwest corner of the park, under the fir trees right across from City Hall. Exact firing times TBD- will will email all participants with details as we get closer.
